Maruti Ciaz - Expected Price, Features and Mileage
Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest selling carmaker, is busy with the final preparations for the Ciaz launch in India that is expected to happen next month. The production of the car has begun at its Manesar, Haryana facility and dealers across India might start taking pre-bookings by the end of this month. While the launch is still a month away, our sources have revealed some crucial details about the car. The vehicle will be launched in 6 variants: 3 petrol – VXi, VXi+ ZXi and 3 diesel – VDi, VDi+ and ZDi.

Features
Maruti Suzuki is likely to offer projector head-lamps as a standard feature across all Ciaz variants. The base trim is expected to come up with several exciting features such as rear AC vents, electronically adjustable side view mirrors, a music system and dual-tone dashboard. With such features, the Ciaz will be among the most loaded cars in its league.
Along with the features offered on the base variant, the mid-level trims will get steering mounted audio controls, height adjustable driver’s seat, reverse parking sensor and ABS. Whereas, the top-end trim will get additional features like dual airbags, engine start-stop button, 16-inch alloy wheels, 5-inch infotainment system and an automatic day/night rear view mirror.

Xiaomi Unveils MIUI 6 Android UI
Xiaomi, as promised at the Mi 4 smartphone’s launch, unveiled the next version of its MIUI user interface, MIUI 6, on Saturday at an event in Beijing, China.
MIUI 6, the new smartphone UI for Android-based Xiaomi devices, comes with major design refresh and also brings a slew of new features. Notably, the Mi 4 runs MIUI 6 out-of-the-box.
The company, also referred to as ‘China’s Apple’, defined the new Android skin as “the best MIUI ever.” However, as numerous industry pundits have pointed out, the new MIUI version noticeably takes a lot of design inspiration from Apple’s iOS 7 and the newly announced iOS 8 smartphone and tablet operating systems.
The Chinese handset maker announced that the MIUI 6 is currently in beta testing with over 1,000 beta testers; though the number is likely to grow up to 10,000 people by Friday.
The company announced that the MIUI 6 developer version will be open to the public by September and will be rolled out to as ‘final upgrade’ to select Xiaomi handsets by October.
The Xiaomi will begin testing MIUI 6 on the Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 2A, Redmi 1S, and Redmi Note by the end of this year, and updates for these devices can be expected to be rolled-out by next year.
Some of highlight features that the MIUI 6 brings is a brand new design (in what the company calls ‘Content is essence’ philosophy) with flat app icons. The company said at the launch, “MIUI believes that content is the essence, and has put that belief in the design of MIUI 6.”
“MIUI 6 supports moving apps by holding on the app and switch screens. It has the most convenient icons organizing method, supports batch organize and delete icons,” added the company.
MIUI 6 also brings a revamped camera app that will allow swipe down to switch between front and back camera, swipe left to launch menu panel, and swipe right to launch filters. The company has also re-worked the lockscreen notifications on MIUI 6, which will now appear as folded by default.
The new Android OS customisation adds a global search function feature that will allow users to place the search box anywhere on home screen, and even locate apps via it. Some other additions on the MIUI 6 include new Linux kernel and RAM optimisation techniques; new power-saving features to adjust the standby time of the device; 10GB free Mi Cloud storage space for storing images, contacts, messages, call logs and more, and the redesigned Mail app.
In addition to the iOS-styled flat icons and lockscreen notification on the MIUI 6, some of the app icons on the new MIUI appear to come straight from iOS 7 or iOS 8, like the calendar, compass, timer, and calculator.

Vodafone Red packages are available in four pricing options for non-corporate postpaid customers, all of which offer calling, data and text benefits. The Red 499 plan that comes with 1,000 free local and STD calling minutes; 500MB of free data (unspecified 3G/2G), and free 500 local and STD messages. The Red 899 will offer 2,000 free minutes for calling (Local and STD); 2GB of free data, and 1,000 free messages. Red 1299 will offer postpaid customers 4,000 free local and STD minutes; 3GB of free data usage, and 1,500 free texts. Lastly, the Red 1599 plan will offer free 6,000 local and STD calling minutes; 5GB of free data, and 2,000 free messages.
Vodafone also announced Red4Business for enterprise postpaid customers. The Red4Business will be available in three pricing options – Red4Business 666, 999 and 1599.
All the Red4Business plans offer free calls in the CUG (closer user group), and in addition to that, offer 1500, 2500, and 10,000 free local and STD minutes for Red4Business 666, 999 and 1599 plans respectively . Enterprise postpaid customers will also get free 1,000 free messages (local and STD) with all Red4Business plans. For data, the Red4Business 666 offers 1.5GB of free data (unspecified 2G/3G); Red4Business 999 offers 4GB of free data, and Red4Business 1599 offer 8GB of free data.

Aquos Crystal With 5-Inch Edge-to-Edge
Sharp on Tuesday launched the Aquos Crystal smartphone, which will be exclusively sold via Sprint in the US at $239.99 (approximately Rs. 14,500) without contract.
The Sharp Aquos Crystal will be also available on Sprint’s prepaid brands Virgin Mobile (in Black) and Boost Mobile (in White). In both cases, the Aquos Crystal will be priced at $149.99 (approximately Rs. 9,100).
The highlight of Sharp’s new Aquos Crystal smartphone is the nearly bezel-free touchscreen on device. The smartphone also sports Harman Kardon audio technologies.
The Aquos Crystal comes with a 5-inch S-CG Silicon LCD HD (720×1280 pixels) edge-to-edge display. The smartphone runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat out-of-the-box, and is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8926) coupled with 1.5GB of RAM. It comes with built-in 8GB storage, which is further expandable up to 128GB via microSD card.
The smartphone sports an 8-megapixel rear camera, while there is a 1.2-megapixel front camera also onboard. The rear camera comes with features such as scenery modes, framing advisor, night catch, HDR, Panorama, sequential shots, and shutter detect. Interestingly, the Sharp Aquos Crystal features the front-facing camera at the bottom of the front panel of the handset; something we also saw in the Sony Xperia ZL.
Sharp’s Aquos Crystal packs a 2040mAh battery, which is rated to deliver up to 13 hours of talk time, while it measures 131x67x10mm and weighs 141 grams. The smartphone supports Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB, 3G, and 4G LTE connectivity options.
The Japanese electronics giant has sought to include some interesting audio features for Aquos Crystal users, with Harman’s Clari-Fi audio restoration technology, and LiveStage signal processing for a ‘lifelike headphone listening experience’. Sharp is also touting the Clip Now feature, which lets users take screenshots with a swipe and save them with an embedded URL for easy sharing.

How to Send Large Files Over the Internet
Ever had to send a really large file to someone and realised how inconvenient it is? Most email service providers have puny file size limits on attachments. A limit of 25MB is quite small so whether you want to send high-resolution videos or other large files, you’re going to have to rely on Web-based services. Here are some of the best solutions with generous file size limits on the free tier.
1. Send files quickly – no login required
Sometimes you might want to send just one large file and don’t want to bother with signing up and setting up accounts to share files. In such cases, you can either use a service that uploads your file to a server or one that lets the recipient download the file directly from your computer.
These services are great for one-time use, but since the file is being uploaded from your browser, the upload could fail, which means you have to start over from scratch, which can be a frustrating experience over slow or unreliable connections. These are the ones we liked most:
WeTransfer
There are several services that let you upload files to a server and send a downloadable link, but WeTransfer stands out for two reasons – a generous 2GB size limit on single files and no sign up required. Here’s how to use it.
1. Open WeTransfer’s website and click Skip/ I Agree if presented with some prompts.
2. Now you’ll see the option to add files (up to 2GB per file). Each file is stored only for 7 days, after which you’ll have to upload it again.
3. Click Add files > select your files (you can select multiple files) > click Add more files (if needed) > Transfer > Copy link.
4. Send this link to whoever you want to share these files with.
5. WeTransfer also has an iOS app that allows you to send up to files up to 10GB for free. This might be useful if you want to send photos or videos, but since iOS doesn’t have a file manager, you cannot send any other kind of data.
JustBeamIt
If you are concerned about privacy, you can send files via a peer-to-peer service such as JustBeamIt. The service doesn’t store files on its servers and let others download files directly from your computer. For this to work, you will have to keep your browser window open till the recipient has downloaded the file.
JustBeamIt simply creates a download link which the recipient can use to download the file. This link works only once and is only active as long as the download is running. To share a file with another person, you will have to create a new link. This is how it works.
1. Go to JustBeamIt’s website and drag and drop any file (or click the parachute icon and select files). You’ll be presented with a link.
2. Send this link to the person you want to share files with. The recipient will see a webpage with a prompt to begin downloading. Click the file icon to start downloading.
There are no file size limits on JustBeamIt, and unlike the alternatives, it doesn’t require you to install any apps on your computer either.
2. Cloud Storage Services
If you’re using any cloud storage service such as Dropbox or Google Drive, sharing files via email is very easy. These services have generous file size limits and let recipients download files without a hassle too. While the signup and setup is relatively is simple, it can be too much effort if you aren’t already a user and want to send something quickly. In such cases use alternatives mentioned here.
Our favourite is Dropbox because it is available as an app on almost all platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android) and has a good Web interface too. Dropbox gives users 2GB of free storage. You can get more free space by referring others to Dropbox and sometimes by buying a new smartphone, or simply buy more storage if needed.
Dropbox allows you to upload up to 10GB per file when using the Web interface and has no limit on single file sizes when you upload using any of the apps. Once Dropbox is up and running on your machine, simply copy/ move the file you want to share to your Dropbox folder (or any of its sub-folders).
You can do this by clicking on the Dropbox icon on your system tray in Windows, or clicking on the Dropbox icon in the Menu Bar on a Mac and then clicking on the little folder on the top left. This will open the Dropbox folder in Explorer/ Finder. Simply copy the file you want to share to this folder.
Then right-click the link and select Share Dropbox link. This will copy a link to this file, that you can send to anyone you want to share this file with. This can be used to share absolutely any file of any type or size that your system is capable of storing.
If you are away from your computer and want to send someone a file that’s on your Dropbox folder, this is how you can do it.
Here’s how to use it.
1. Open Dropbox and login.
2. After that, select the file or folder you want to share > click the Share link button > click Get Link and send this link to those you want to share the file with.
Other services like Google Drive, Box and OneDrive work in similar ways, and can be used instead. Google Drive in notable because it lets you upload up to 1TB per file, but free storage is capped at 15GB. You might want to use Google Drive if you need to send files larger than Dropbox’s limit.
Send large files via email
As mentioned earlier, email attachments are too limiting if you intend to send large files. However, popular email services have cloud integration as well, so you can send large files almost as if they were attachments.

Uttar Pradesh flood toll rises to 48
The toll in Uttar Pradesh floods on Monday increased to 48, with reports of 20 more deaths in the state where several rivers were flowing above danger mark posing threat to more than 1,000 villages.
According to officials, nine persons died in Bahraich, eight in Shravasti, two in Balrampur and one in Lakhimpur in flood related incidents in past 24 hours.
Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Lakhimpur, Barabanki, Gonda, Sitapur, Faizabad and Azamgarh were the worst affected districts in the state.
With several rivers flowing over the danger mark, state government has asked the district officials to remain in constant touch with the affected people and also warned that no laxity in the relief works would be tolerated.
Chief Secretary Alok Ranjan has asked Principal Secretary Revenue to take reports of the flood situation on a daily basis and apprise senior officials and government of the same.
Directing the officials concerned to keep in constant contact with the affected people, Ranjan warned “no laxity in the relief works would be tolerated”.
According to Additional District Magistrate, Shravasti, eight persons were killed in separate flood related incidents in Bhinga and Ikauna tehsils of the district, while four persons, swept away in flood water, could not be traced yet.
A total of 117 villages in two tehsils of the district, having a population of 60,000, have been affected by floods.
In Bahraich, Chief Revenue officer, U S Upadhyay said level of water of Saryu river has come below the danger mark while river Ghaghra was still flowing about the danger mark.
An NDRF team has been deployed here for rescue and relief operations. The district administration has requested for two helicopters from the army to carry out rescue and relief work in villages situated in the interior areas.
Rising water level of river Ghaghra also posed a threat to rail and road traffic. Traffic at National Highway 28 was affected on Bahraich-Lucknow road after flood water of Ghaghra submerged the roads near Ganeshpur. The rising water level almost touched the railway line at Ghaghra bridge posing a threat of disruption to rail traffic.
In Balrampur and Barabaki, two persons each drowned in separate incidents due to floods while in Lakhimpur, body of a three-year-old girl was recovered from a village, according to SDM, Lakhimpur Narendra Singh.
According to Central Water Commission report, Rapti river was touching danger mark in Balrampur while it was flowing above the danger mark in Birdghat in Gorakhpur.

The logic is if the new body is modelled exactly on the lines of NDRC, it needs immense power and clout over almost all central ministries as exercised by the Chinese body. An announcement on the new body is expected to be made shortly, officials said.
NDRC has broad administrative and planning control over the entire Chinese economy and is sometimes also referred to as ‘mini-state council’ and the ‘number-one ministry.’
It has 26 functional departments, with around 900 civil servants. India’s Planning Commission has 31 divisions and seven attached offices, which include the Unique Identification Authority of India and Independent Evaluation Office (the latter had recommended about the need to change the Commission’s role).
“In fact, if you see China’s NDRC, it has powers to even authorise raids and inspections to control a price spike and can reconsider cases related to price violation, which I doubt the new body will have,” a former Commission member said.
The move to abolish the Commission and replace it with a new body is being opposed by some opposition parties and states. The Trinamool Congress in West Bengal has said it would raise this at the next session of Parliament.
“I don’t think that creating an over-arching body in place of the Planning Commission on the lines of China’s NDRC will be opposed by the central ministries, provided it is backed by the Prime Minister’s Office. But, the basic problem will be to get the states to agree to such a move,” Yogendra Alagh, a former minister for planning and programme implementation, told Business Standard.
He said the problem would be in allocation of development funds to states under Article 282 of the Constitution. “In case of development funds for central ministries there won’t be any problem but I’m not sure about the same in the case of state governments as politics will come into play,” Alagh said.
He said the administrative structures in the state were customised to deal with the Planning Commission.
Officials in the Commission agreed with Alagh. They said it was in 2013 when Modi had presented a ‘blueprint’ of a new Planning Commission during one of his annual plan meetings as then Gujarat chief minister and had mentioned about the NDRC in China. “Mr Modi had made a presentation where he raised questions over the current role of the Commission,” said an official who was present. It seems he had a vision about the Commission’s role much before he became the prime minister, the official said.
As in India, China’s NDRC subsumed the State Development Planning Commission, in 2003.The latter had emerged from the State Planning Commission, a structure similar to India’s Planning Commission.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha Launched
Samsung took the wraps off its latest Galaxy smartphone, the Galaxy Alpha. The South Korean electronics giant is calling the Galaxy Alpha”the evolution of Galaxy Design”, touting its “metal frame, elegantly curved corners, and a tactile soft back cover”.
Samsung says the newly-unveiled Galaxy Alpha with metal frame is built using “sophisticated and compact construction techniques.” The Galaxy Alpha was previously previewed by the company at a yachting event in Moscow.
The Samsung Galaxy Alpha runs the latest Android 4.4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box. It features a 4.7-inch HD (720×1280 pixels) Super AMOLED display. The handset sports a sleek profile with dimensions 132.4×65.5×6.7mm and weighs 115 grams.
Much like recently released high-end smartphones – LG G3 Cat.6, LG G3 A, and Samsung Galaxy S5 LTE-A – the Samsung Galaxy Alpha also comes with the LTE Cat.6 support denoting LTE-A speeds of up to 300Mbps (peak download rates).
The Galaxy Alpha is powered by an octa-core chipset, most probably Samsung’s Exynos SoC, with quad-core 1.8GHz and quad-core 1.3GHz. The smartphone also comes in a quad-core variant with a clock speed of 2.5GHz, presumably the Snapdragon 805 SoC the other LTE-A smartphones are carrying.
Considering that Samsung launched the octa-core variant of the Galaxy S5 in India, we can expect the company to announce the octa-core variant of the Galaxy Alpha, and may bring the LTE-A version later.
There is 2GB of RAM and 32GB inbuilt storage, which is non-expandable. The Galaxy Alpha sports a 12-megapixel rear camera and also includes 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. It packs an 1860mAh battery.
Apart from LTE, other connectivity options include Micro-USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPRS/EDGE, 3G, and NFC. The Galaxy Alpha, much like the flagship Galaxy S5, comes with fingerprint scanner.
The company notes that the Galaxy Alpha at launch will be available in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue colour variants.

Obama Takes Steps To Give White House Technology An Upgrade
CHILMARK, Mass. (AP) — The White House on Monday announced the creation of a team of digital experts tasked with upgrading the government’s technology infrastructure and making its websites more consumer friendly.
The move is aimed at avoiding a repeat of the website debacle that marred the rollout of President Barack Obama’s signature health care legislation last year. While the administration ultimately surpassed its enrollment targets, the opening weeks of sign-ups were riddled with website troubles that raised questions about the administration’s competence.
The new digital team will be overseen by Mikey Dickerson, an engineer who took leave from Google in order to oversee fixes to the HealthCare.gov site.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to shift the focus of government IT delivery from compliance to greater impact and meeting the needs of real citizens,” Dickerson said in a statement. “We can make services a lot more effective and cost efficient with better use of technology.”
In the midst of the health care website’s troubles, Obama bemoaned the limitations of government IT procurement procedures and called for changing to the system.
The White House said Dickerson’s team would seek to bring government digital services in line with the private sector and collaborate with federal agencies to identify and address gaps in their capacity to design and operate customer-facing services. Officials said this new team would be comprised of about 25 people, including some new hires from outside government.
As part of the digital team launch, the administration also released a playbook of best digital practices for government agencies and a handbook with ways the government can act with existing regulations to procure services that mirror the private sector.
The White House announced the new digital team while Obama was in the midst of his two-week summer vacation to the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 images
Images of the Galaxy Note 4 have been leaked ahead of the big unveiling Samsung has planned for 3 September.
Of course, we should say supposed pics of the Note 4, as they come with the usual caveats – GSM Arena received them from an anonymous tipster, so the source is hardly a cast iron one. However, the pics look somewhat convincing (see one of the images above).
If this is the Note 4, then it comes with metal on the side of the handset, although the faux-leather-style textured back remains the same, as does the general appearance on the front. The metal edging does make the handset seem a little chunky to our eyes, though, particularly on the bottom.
Another notable point is that there seems to be some kind of sensor next to the camera lens on the rear – most likely a heart rate monitor a la Galaxy S5.
Anyway, we’ve only got three weeks to wait to find out whether this is actually the Galaxy Note 4.
Samsung will be pinning plenty of hopes to the handset it’s set to unveil ahead of IFA, given that the Galaxy S5 has failed to unseat the iPhone 5S or 5C in terms of UK sales (at least according to Uswitch.com over the past few months).
The Note 4′s expected specs include a 5.7in display – the same as the previous model, but with a much boosted 2560 x 1440 resolution – and it’ll be powered by a Snapdragon 805 partnered with 3GB of RAM.

Oppo N1 Mini With 13-Megapixel Swivel
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo has launched the anticipated N1 Mini in India, priced at Rs. 26,990. The smartphone, most famous for its 13-megapixel rotating camera, will be available on store shelves from Monday in its Light Blue and White colour variants, while the Yellow variant will be made available in September.
The N1 Mini is a single-SIM smartphone that runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with the company’s custom skin, ColorOS 1.4, on top of it. It features a 5-inch (720×1280 pixels) display made by JDI and is powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor alongside Adreno 305 GPU and 2GB of RAM.

Saavn Adds 800,000 English Songs
South Asian Audio Video Network (Saavn) on Saturday announced the addition of 800,000 English songs in partnership with two more Western labels – Warner Music and EMI – for users in India.
The partnership with Warner and EMI makes Saavn’s catalogue jump up from 1.1 million songs to nearly 2 million, already including content from other major Western labels, Sony and Universal.
Saavn says that its music app users in India will now be able to stream tracks by everyone from The Grateful Dead to Madonna to LCD Soundsystem.
“India continues to be the largest music listening population in the world, and we’ll continue to invest in bringing the best music streaming experience to our users. Adding Warner and EMI to our catalog is another major milestone,” said Rishi Malhotra, CEO, Saavn.
The music streaming company has also announced a shift in its executive leadership structure by appointing former President Rishi Malhotra as the new CEO for Saavn, while current CEO Vinodh Bhat will now take on the new role of President and Chief Strategy Officer.
“As we enter the next phase of consumer-facing growth, I am excited about Rishi’s unique combination of strong leadership, hands-on management, and product focus in the CEO role. As one of HBO’s youngest senior executives several years ago, he built a $100 million business for their multi-platform group, and many of those same skills continue to help Saavn achieve even greater heights,” said, Vinodh Bhat.

Xiaomi Apologises for Unauthorised Data Access
Xiaomi Inc said it had upgraded its operating system to ensure users knew it was collecting data from their address books after a report by a computer security firm said the Chinese budget smartphone maker was taking personal data without permission.
The privately held company said it had fixed a loophole in its cloud messaging system that had triggered the unauthorised data transfer and that the operating system upgrade had been rolled out on Sunday.
The issue was highlighted last week in a blog post by security firm F-Secure Oyg and had been reported by media outlets in Taiwan. Like Apple Inc’s iMessage service, Xiaomi lets users avoid SMS charges by routing messages over the Internet rather than through a carrier’s network.

Hot on the tail of the iPhone 6 release, is the potential of Samsung’s latest offerings. With the Samsung Galaxy Alpha making a few appearances in news feeds lately, there’s a lot of speculation as to just what the new device has to offer.
Samsung Galaxy Alpha Specifications Leaked
Earlier this year we started hearing rumors that Samsung is working on a device with a metal body. The company has always stuck with plastic for its flagship Galaxy S series and this rumor led many to believe that perhaps this year the company might stray from tradition. It did not and then we started to hear about a completely different device that was supposedly made out of metal.
Specifications are yet to be confirmed. However, the look and feel of the new Galaxy Alpha with its metal casing will spark a lot of interest, I’m sure. Something a little different from the norm. Here’s an article with a few more images to wet your appetite.
Additional Samsung Galaxy Alpha Photos Surface
A couple of days ago, alleged photos of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Alpha were leaked online. The photos showed off the metal frame of the handset and if you were hoping to see more images, thanks to a recent series of posts by @culeaks, additional photos of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Alpha have leaked online.
It looks attractive from what you can see. We’ll have to wait for the official promotions, but until then, here’s a video as to what consumers are hoping for.
It really is thin! Samsung have been listening to consumers requirements and incorporated them into the design.
So have Apple taken too long to release their next cell phone? With the constant release of Android phones, could this really have an impact on sales for the iPhone 6. I guess we’ll know come September time.
